Autism Diagnosis and Assessments in Banbury, Bicester and Brackley

I offer specialist autism diagnostic assessments for both children and adults living in Banbury, Bicester, Brackley and surrounding areas. My assessments follow evidence-based, NICE-informed practice and are designed to provide clarity, understanding, and a path forward—whether or not a diagnosis of autism is given.

Understanding Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how people experience the world, communicate, and relate to others. It is not an illness or something that needs to be "fixed"—rather, it is a different way of being that brings both strengths and challenges.

Many children and adults live with undiagnosed autism, often developing ways to cope or "mask" their differences. While this can be effective in the short term, it can also lead to exhaustion, anxiety, and a sense of not being understood.

A diagnostic assessment can help you or your child understand these experiences, access appropriate support, and develop greater self-compassion. Whether you are a parent concerned about your child, or an adult who has long wondered whether autism might explain your experiences, I am here to help.

What Does an Autism Assessment Involve?

An autism assessment is a thorough, collaborative process. I take time to understand your unique experiences and gather information from multiple sources to reach a clear, well-evidenced conclusion.

1

Initial consultation

A conversation to understand your concerns, answer questions, and discuss whether an assessment would be helpful.

2

Developmental history

A detailed interview exploring early development, social experiences, and current strengths and challenges. For children, this involves parents or carers; for adults, we may include a family member or use detailed self-reflection.

3

Standardised tools and questionnaires

Use of recognised assessment measures to gather structured information about autism-related traits and experiences.

4

Clinical observation

Observation of social communication, interaction patterns, and other relevant behaviours during our sessions.

5

Collateral information

With consent, gathering input from school, college, or workplace to build a fuller picture.

6

Feedback session

A comprehensive discussion of findings, whether diagnostic criteria are met, and what this means for you or your child going forward.

Evidence-based practice: My assessments are informed by NICE guidelines and draw on recognised diagnostic tools and clinical expertise. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring you receive care that meets professional standards.

Who Might Benefit from an Autism Assessment?

People seek autism assessments for many reasons. You might recognise some of the following experiences in yourself or your child:

Lifelong differences in social communication or relationships
Sensory sensitivities or strong preferences
Feeling different from others or not quite fitting in
Masking or camouflaging in social situations
Burnout, exhaustion, or overwhelm from daily demands
Anxiety, low mood, or difficulties that haven't responded to other support
Challenges at school, university, or work
Difficulty with transitions or changes in routine
A family member's diagnosis prompting self-reflection

This is not an exhaustive list. If you are unsure whether an assessment is right for you or your child, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your concerns.

Autism Assessments for Children and Adults

I provide autism assessments for both children and adults. The process is tailored to the individual, taking into account age, developmental stage, and personal circumstances.

Assessments for Children

For children, the assessment process involves working closely with parents or carers to understand your child's development, behaviour, and experiences. I gather information through:

  • Detailed parent/carer interviews about early development and current functioning
  • Observation of your child during play and interaction
  • Questionnaires and standardised assessment tools
  • Input from school or nursery (with your consent)

The feedback session provides a clear explanation of findings and practical guidance for supporting your child at home and school.

Assessments for Adults

Many adults seek assessment after years of feeling different or following a family member's diagnosis. The adult assessment process includes:

  • A detailed interview exploring your developmental history and current experiences
  • Self-report questionnaires and standardised measures
  • Where possible, input from a parent, sibling, or partner who knew you in childhood
  • Detailed self-reflection if collateral information is not available

A diagnosis in adulthood can bring relief, validation, and a new framework for understanding yourself. I provide space to process what the findings mean for you.
